WASHINGTON — There’s a good chance that some of the email you get got to you thanks to SparkPost, and the company has growth plans for its Maryland headquarters location.

SparkPost has moved its Maryland operations to new space at 9160 Guilford Road in Columbia, doubling its size from its previous 13,900 square foot office across the street, to nearly 30,000 square feet at its new location.

Gov. Larry Hogan attended SparkPost’s official new headquarters ribbon-cutting Thursday afternoon. The company began the actual move earlier this year.

The software company’s goal is to grow its Maryland workforce from 88 employees currently to more than 200 over the next few years. Most of the new hires will be engineering and technical professionals.

SparkPost makes the software used by big companies, including Pinterest, Twitter, Intercom, LinkedIn, Zillow and Comcast, to send email. The company says it’s the world’s No. 1 email delivery provider, with its customers sending more than 3 trillion messages a year. That’s more than 25 percent of the world’s non-spam email.

It describes its new office space as a modern design and open floor plan for easy cross-department collaboration, with expansive break rooms stocked with free food, a wellness room and 20 communal rooms with quiet spaces and meeting areas.

The company, co-based in San Francisco, also has offices in and London.

SparkPost CEO Phillip Merrick, who splits his time between San Francisco and Maryland, has deep ties to the D.C. tech industry. He co-founded Fairfax, Virginia-based enterprise software company webMethods in 1996, which would become the most successful software IPO to date in February of 2000.

webMethods was acquired by Software AG in 2007 for $550 million.
