Maryland Food Bank

Timely Media Efforts Position Maryland Food Bank as Experts

Summary

In the fall of 2025, Maroon PR worked with the Maryland Food Bank to develop and lead a media relations and content strategy to address the anticipated impacts of a government shutdown and a pause in SNAP benefits for Maryland families.

Strategy & Results

Maroon PR has had the privilege of working as the Maryland Food Bank’s public relations partner since 2015. Over the years, one of our main strategies has been to position the Maryland Food Bank’s leaders as experts in the Food Insecurity space. This requires our team to stay on top of national and statewide issues and anticipate the appropriate times to insert Maryland Food Bank into the conversation.

In the fall of 2025, as a government shutdown loomed, Maroon PR stepped up and quickly pulled together a strategy to position Meg Kimmel as an expert on SNAP benefits and how the Maryland Food Bank will counteract the negative impact of SNAP reductions.

In early November, the Maryland Food Bank coordinated two press conferences—one in-person and one virtual—to quickly communicate the anticipated impacts of a SNAP benefits pause on Maryland families.

CEO Meg Kimmel served as the primary spokesperson, highlighting the Food Bank’s continued commitment to serving neighbors in need and outlining strategies to counteract the negative impacts of SNAP reductions. In addition to the press conferences, there were numerous opportunities before and after the events for both the Maryland Food Bank and/or Meg Kimmel to be featured in media coverage surrounding the government shutdown. These appearances reinforced the organization’s leadership role, amplified key messages, and helped garner public support.

These efforts generated over 130 media hits within 2–3 days across major print and broadcast outlets, including MSNBC, WTOP News, Baltimore Business Journal, The Baltimore Sun, Maryland Matters, WBAL TV and Radio, among others.

Media coverage related to the government shutdown reached a total viewership of 13,523,677 and 270,698,931 unique monthly visitors (UMV), significantly raising awareness of the Food Bank’s efforts to ensure food access for Marylanders during a critical period.

Coverage and appearances not only raised public awareness but also reinforced relationships with community partners, policymakers, and donors, helping to support collaborative efforts to address food insecurity during the SNAP benefits pause and government shutdown.

Owned Media Approach

In addition to Earned Media efforts, Maroon PR handles content strategy and development for the Maryland Food Bank. In support of this campaign, our team created a series of videos using various Maryland Food Bank experts to dive deeper into the issue of SNAP benefits and Maryland Food Bank’s commitment to helping neighbors navigate uncertain times. These videos are used across the Maryland Food Bank’s social and digital channels and are also included in media pitching efforts. Below are two examples:
